Park Avenue Mall Sculptures
April 25 –October 27
Suggested Ages: All, Adult Friendly
Two new sculptural installations join the Park Avenue Malls’s 66,000 orange peony double tulips commemorating the 400th anniversary of the city’s founding by Dutch colonists.
In Jorge Otero-Pailos’ Analogue Sites (Park Avenue @ E 53rd, 66th & 67th Streets), three monumental steel sculptures wrought from fencing that surrounded the former Eero Saarinen-designed U.S Embassy in Oslo explore the intersection of art, architecture and cultural diplomacy.
In Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero’ Traces in Order to Remember (Park Avenue @ 8E 1st, 82nd & 83rd Streets), recycled industrial tires, carved and painted with gold and silver, are reminders of the laborers from the south who work the land and the public transport tires hold the memories of so many hopes and grievances. The exhibition serves as a memorial to cultures and migrants who have lost so much during their painful journeys. By incorporating pre-Hispanic iconography into each piece, they honor an ancestral culture and rich civilization that still has much to offer today.
ID signs are installed next to each sculpture with a Bloomberg App QR Code for more information.
